Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
The Kinksが1970年にReleaseした8th Album。Smash Hitsを2曲含んだConcept Albumとして有名。
The KinksはUK出身のBandで1964年から1996年まで活動。MemberはDavies Brothersを中心に構成される。1990年にRockの殿堂入りを果たし、Ivor Novello Awardsも受賞している。
音楽性はUKのLifestyleを描写したLyricと、Concept AlbumというImageが強い。個人的には最もUKらしいRock Bandだと捉えている。
Openingは爽やかなAcoustic GuitarからPowerfulなGuitarに変貌を遂げる「The Contenders」でStart。Rock and RollばりのPianoもCool。続くは何処かのFarmで歌ってるかの様な「Strangers」。終始のどかな雰囲気で、Dave DaviesがVocalとWritingを担当。
気怠めのVocalにBritishなSoundがMatchする「Denmark Street」「Get Back in Line」も良好だが、UKで2位を獲得した「Lola」が前半のHighlightだろう。Drag Queenについて書かれたLyricが有名だが、それ以上にHard過ぎないFirm Soundと効果的なChorusが素晴らしい。
「Top of the Pops」はRay DaviesのAlternativeなVocalが光るが、Drumsの後のKinks史上最高のGuitar Riffが必聴。
Fairy Taleを彷彿とさせる滑稽なSoundの「The Moneygoround」や、Acoustic Guitar Riffも飛び出す「This Time Tomorrow」と幅が広い。
「Rats」も「Lola」同様にFirm Soundが特徴で、要所で掻き鳴らすHardかつNoizyなSoundに注目。
正真正銘のHighlightはUKで5位を獲得した「Apeman」。ずっと「Lola」がHighlightだと思っていたが、久しぶりに聴いてSimpleながらTrackの質の高さに驚いた。UK Rock meets Calypsoの完成形。
EndingはConcept Albumらしく「The Contenders」のIntroductionをSamplingした「Got to Be Free」でThe End。
